About the San Antonio RiverWalk

You can't go to San Antonio without strolling the Paseo del Río (River Walk). This 3-mile stretch of the San Antonio River threads through downtown and is one of its uniquely wonderful features. Walk the cobblestone paths, stretch out on garden-bedecked banks (20 feet below street level) or take a river taxi or boat tour aboard Rio San Antonio Cruise. When you get hungry, stop at one of the colorful cafes along the river. Whether you float or saunter, any transportation mode is a great way to shop and see the sights.

Paseo del Río (River Walk) runs through the heart of the business district. A few steps below the city streets, the River Walk provides a pleasant stroll during the day, when craft shops and galleries are open and sidewalk terraces teem with diners. The tree-lined footpaths, romantically lighted at night, follow landscaped riverbanks bordered by nightspots, restaurants and handicraft shops.

Paseo Del Rio in the heart of downtown, is the pride of the city. Lush green foliage lines the banks of this peaceful, historic river. Cobblestone walkways lead visitors to the river-level restaurants and shops. The river bubbles to the surface on the grounds of the University of the Incarnate Word and flows to downtown, threading its way through the city one level below the hustle and bustle of city streets. First called Yanaguana by the Payaya Indians, meaning "place of refreshing waters." Along the horseshoe shaped riverbend, the river is shaded by towering cypresses, oaks and willows and bordered by gardens of flowering ornamental plants. River cruisers travel the River Walk's three miles past unique retail shops, restaurants and nightclubs.

Rio San Antonio Cruise departs from three locations: Rivercenter Mall, Market and Alamo, and the Holiday Inn Riverwalk. Narrated 40-minute tours follow the San Antonio River in the downtown area. Guides point out the sites along the Paseo del Río / River Walk and relay the river's history. Allow 1 hour minimum.
