About the San Antonio RiverWalk

The San Antonio RiverWalk is one of the premier attractions in the Texas Hill Country, offering everything a vacationing family or individual could want in entertainment. The RiverWalk is made up of a set of long, winding walking paths that follow along a 2.5 mile path next to the San Antonio River, and is the place to go for award winning food, activities, night life and more in the city.

Plans for what is today the RiverWalk began in the 1920s after the San Antonio River flooded and killed 50 people. A dam was built upstream from the city, and a bypass around a large curve in the river was also planned. In the late 1920s a prominent businessman, Jack White, helped push a beautification project through a bond issue and began the process of building the RiverWalk in its first incarnation. In the proposals for the project, leaders suggested that the bend that was being bypassed actually be paved and surrounded with areas of commercial development. The first restaurant in the area did not open until the 1940s, however. Over the years the RiverWalk became increasingly popular with both visitors and business owners; the area was expanded by several miles in 2011.

Visitors to the RiverWalk can experience nearly all of what San Antonio has to offer without ever leaving the water's edge. There are numerous places to stay, including five-star hotels that have entrances on the waterfront. There are also numerous nightclubs and bars for adult entertainment options, as well as river boat rides, shops offering a vast variety of wares and museums showcasing the history of the state and San Antonio area. Dozens of events are held along the RiverWalk each year, with many corresponding with special occasions such as the Fourth of July and Christmas.
